Megashears and hydrothermalism at the Martian crustal dichotomy in Valles Marineris

چکیده
Abstract Observations of ancient deep deformation systems on Mars are important for constraining planetary dynamics, as well to identify potential mineral resources. However, such were thought be unexposed and inaccessible analysis. Here, we apply structural hyperspectral analyses, correlate results with magnetic anomaly patterns, investigate two large right-lateral brittle-ductile shear zones fault megabreccia exposed in the deepest parts Valles Marineris. The follow trace edge Borealis impact basin, represent dichotomy boundary. We hydrothermally altered mafic igneous rocks sheared basement. suggest that system was initiated basin ring pre-Noachian, further reactivation up until Hesperian, may still a source marsquakes. Lakes in Valles Marineris, Mars
Introduction: The question whether the Valles Marineris harbored lakes has been debated ever since McCauley [1] proclaimed that the horizontality and lateral continuity of the interior layered deposits (ILD) suggested that they were deposited in lakes. Recent evidence, summarized here, sheds new light on this old problem. Morphology and composition: The increasingly better resolution of images ...
متن کاملThe Formation of Valles Marineris, Mars
Introduction: Valles Marineris is the most prominent tectonic feature on Mars, consisting of troughs up to 2000 km in length, 200 km in width, and 10 km in depth. A scenario for trough formation is here proposed that is consistent with the geological and geophysical evidence, and predicts a priori the observed trough depths. The proposed mechanism entails a combination of Tharsis loading over t...
متن کاملFlexural Response to Sediment Erosion and Unloading at Valles Marineris,
Introduction: The origin and evolution of the Valles Marineris canyon system and its stacks of interior layered deposits (ILD) on Mars remains as one of the most debated topics in Martian tectonics. The subtle broad topographic uplift around the periphery of the canyon system conflicts with the uplifted flanks predicted by models of normal faulting [1]. This uplift is obscured in the east and w...
متن کاملAdmittance estimates of mean crustal thickness and density at the Martian hemispheric dichotomy
[1] Admittance estimates from line-of-sight (LOS) acceleration profiles of the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft are used to constrain the mean crustal thickness and surface density centered on the hemispheric dichotomy, from 110 E to 220 E, 40 S to 20 N. Models with uniform crustal properties predict lower than expected bulk crustal densities. Two-layer models with loading only at the surface an...
متن کاملMorphology and geometry of Valles Marineris landslides
The walls of the Valles Marineris canyons are affected by about 45 landslides. The study of these landslides provides a test of the hypothesis of processes having affected Martian wallslopes after their formation. The dynamics of Valles Marineris landslides are controversial : either the landslides are interpreted as large debris flows or as dry rock avalanches. Their morphology and their topog...
